Two Meals in Life of A PhD Student…

Everybody needs food. Some ask for something better than just food, and by now, you should have known I fall into the latter group. When Yashin Sushi was opened almost next door to the V&A Theatre Archive, I thought myself fortunate but now researching at the National, I also happen to have these two quick lunch favourites just minutes away.

Yes, these are meals for loners …

THE CUT BAR & RESTAURANT, YOUNG VIC

The Cut Bar & Restaurant, Young Vic on Urbanspoon

Many do not take a theatre restaurant seriously and they might have a reason to do so. Theatre-goers are only after quickies to fill their tummy before the show. The Cut is one of the few exception. People linger; people pop in without theatre tickets in hand. The place has become a local bar&restaurant. There are dishes sync’ed with theatre programmes such as this Vernon God Little burger. A chicken burger with guacamole and melting cheese, while the A La Carte menu features the Deep-Fried Plantain Balls served with Beetroot Salsa Sour Cream and Lemon Wedges. Sweet and creamy with a zingy contrast. Both are ace – and relatively budget!

ANCHOR & HOPE

For a grander meal – not trying to be ironic – I usually settle myself at early hours at Anchor and Hope, same amazing operator as Great Queen Street, for some solid gastropub offerings. On my most recent visit, the Smoked Cod Roe on Toast was sumptuous, and the Pork Stewed with Mash and Wild Mushrooms was rich in flavours. The rosemary came through nicely and the pork was utterly tender. Unlike Great Queen Street, Anchor and Hope is less of a gourmet meal but a fine comfort. The churros dessert with poached rhubarb and rustic panna cotta, quite heavy, was a perfect way to revive one’s soul.

Et, voila. I need to get back to my paper now x

Enough said,

My head rating for The Cut Bar&Restaurant says, “7 out of 10″.

My heart rating says, “7 out of 10″.
