Burger VS Burger VS Burger (1)

Back Camera

I was never a fan of hamburgers. I found them to be too meaty and less healthy, but having lived in London for a few odd years, I noticed the change in the burger trend. It’s not that they had become less meaty, but there seem to be more variations–fillings as well as price ranges on offer–and very slowly I have been coverted into a burger lover.

And here it is, my first compilation of London’s Burger-Do and Burger-Don’t!!

First up is what I call the institution Burger-Do!, AKA the burger stop everybody must have been, where the quality of the meat meets the satisfaction of the unfussy diners. My favourite pick is the always bustling Ed’s Diner, on Old Compton Street. I always have the Big Bubba, containing medium-cooked beef, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, dill pickle, bacon, cheese, mayonaise and mustard. To make this incredibly filling, I ask for an extra fried egg. This costs just below £8.

Massive!! But, I did manage to bite it down :-9

If you feel like changing the burger venue, go to Anthony Demetre’s new restaurant Les Deux Salons, which I have blogged about here, and ask for a Cheese Burger, priced at £12 but inclusive of chips and salad. Demetre’s burger is a fat-boy-killer size. The meat, cooked medium rare unless asked otherwise, is packed and almost two inches thick!! I am forced to eat with my knife and fork. I can’t really get my fingers greasy here. The food there beside the burger is stunning, too!

And this is my Burger-Don’t! I went for this burger brunch at Helene Darroze at the Connaught with high expectations of a solid burger with foir gras. But, when my burger arrived, I could say it was a “burger” in quotation. Instead of a solid piece of grilled meat, I had braised Ox’s Cheek toppled with a piece of pan-seared foie gras and onion rings. The quality was nice but it wasn’t really a burger!! That said, the ketchup made in house was very lovely. The total cost of my brunch, including a continental buffet of terrine, chacouterie and sweets but excluding service, was £38. The dark chocolate brownie was good, but overall, it wasn’t worth it!

This was a bit of a disappointment because I had breakfast by Darroze at Espelette and it was to die for!!

Enough said and judging from the burger only ….
