Kai: Brief Note on Mayfair’s Chinese

A Mayfair neighbourhood restaurant.

Chinese. Quite modern. By the brother of Alan Yau. One Michelin star. Not much talked about until it got on Ramsay’s Best Restaurant on Channel 4. I don’t have much else to say. Kai isn’t one of those restaurants that make a lot of impact to you after you eat there (just like many other 1-starred restaurants really!).

Fast-forwarding to my favourite dish there…”Braised Abalone, Fresh Truffles, Broccolini, Jus Reduction”. A big makeover of a traditional abalone dish, which worked marvellously. There is a real bite, not-too-chewy texture of the abalone intensified by the jus, while the broccolini adds a lighter, refreshing touch to the dish. Truffles shaved on top. True luxury.

Good desserts, too. ‘Sunshine’ Dumplings” were glutinous rice dumplings, ginger, honey crisp wafers and ice cream, lemon curd (left) and Pumpkin cream, purple rice and coconut ice-cream (right). Very unique in the modern Chinese restaurant scene in London.

To conclude..

IMPRESSION: 3.5/5
INNOVATION: 4/5
COMFORT: 3.5/5
